RePrinting Claremont seeks to celebrate the rich history of printmaking in Claremont by uniting Claremont’s historic printmakers and student creators from the Claremont Colleges. Printmaking in Claremont dates to the early 20th century when a group of artists who served as faculty members at the Claremont Colleges founded the Claremont College Press in 1946. The Claremont College Press soon gained a reputation for producing high-quality prints and began attracting artists to Claremont. The press was instrumental in promoting the printmaking medium in Southern California and played a significant role in the development of the “California Style” of printmaking.
Over time, Claremont attracted diverse groups of artists who were drawn to its thriving art scene, creative energy, and artistic community. Today, the city is a vibrant hub of artistic activity — you can witness so yourself at RePrinting Claremont.
The exhibition presents prints by Millard Sheets, Susan Lautman Hertel, Karl Benjamin, Phil Dike, and other prominent Claremont artists. It also aims to integrate Claremont’s newest creators into this living history – student artists from the Claremont Colleges.
Visit the Ginger Elliott Gallery to learn more about how printmaking has evolved over time, support local artists, and connect with others who share a passion for the arts.
